Joe Cafaro
Treasury Associate
As a Treasury Associate, I support our domestic team and am responsible for all day-to-day operations related to banking and cash management. This includes opening and closing bank accounts according to deal volume as well as cash positioning – which means ensuring we gain the highest yield possible across all of our accounts.
Describe your career journey.
I went to Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY and majored in Finance. After college I worked as a Treasury Analyst at a small bank for two years, then worked at Canon for three years before joining W. P. Carey. My day-to-day tasks at Canon were very similar to what I do now, but the nature of the business was obviously very different. I definitely had a lot of learning to do when I got here, but my team was incredibly supportive and helpful in getting me up to speed!
What do you think it takes to succeed at WPC?
I would say it takes patience to succeed at WPC. It takes time to learn the business – and there will be moments in the beginning where you are humbled (I sure was!). However, the executives and managers here really do give you the baton and let you run with your own career, while being in the background to support and guide you. I’ve never felt more in control of my work than I do here, and that’s really empowering.
What’s the best part about WPC?
One of the best parts about W. P. Carey is the people. Everyone is extremely personable, fun and easy to work with. Even when we’re working on a stressful project, everyone is able to keep their composure, remain respectful and support one another. The people of WPC are very real with who they are – and are not putting on a mask when they come to work – which makes it easier to get to know your colleagues on a personal level.
Another thing I love about W. P. Carey is that once you get settled in your role and understand how the company operates, you can really just “rock and roll” with your job. Opportunities are endless as long as you take advantage. We’re a lean organization, so the work you’re doing makes an actual impact on the company – and that’s really rewarding.
